Bathing Water Designation

Save Our Swale is planning to apply for Bathing Water Designation, for part of the River Swale 50m to the west of the Richmond Falls, as shown in the map.

Application for bathing water designation of the River Swale

1

What is DBWS?

Designated Bathing Water Status (DBWS) is an official recognition that a body of water (like a river, lake, or sea) meets certain water quality standards, making it suitable for bathing.

2

Why apply for DBWS?

If the application is successful, the Environment Agency would be required to regularly test the river water quality for bacteria between 15 May and 30 September. The site would then be given an annual classification: 'Excellent', 'Good', 'Sufficient', or 'Poor'. North Yorkshire Council would then have to display this information on-site so the public can make an informed decision about using the river.

If the water quality is classified as 'Poor' or 'Sufficient', government agencies would have to investigate pollution sources and take steps to improve the water quality.
